         London Psychological Therapy

A choice of therapies for a wide range of psychological difficulties

What happens in the first meeting?

The initial session is usually used to discuss your reasons for seeking therapy as well as clarify your goals and expectations. We will also discuss what approach would suit you best and whether I am the right person to work with you. If we decide to carry on working together we will agree on an initial number of sessions which we will review on a regular basis. If you are unsure about what your problem is you can still come for an assessment and we could discuss whether psychological therapy is the best way forward for you.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the issue(s) you wish to address and resolve. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Solution-Focused Therapy are usually short to medium term (up to 24 sessions). Short-term therapy is generally effective in resolving a specific crisis or a problem. Psychotherapy is often open-ended and can last longer when working on breaking more established patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving and relating.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist and counsellor?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry and, unlike psychologists, psychotherapists or counsellors, are permitted to prescribe medication for psychological problems.

Psychologists have a degree in psychology and are subsequently trained in specialist areas such as clinical, counselling, educational or other fields.

Counselling psychologists are trained to practice at least two models of evidence-based therapies. A large number of Counselling Psychologists work in the National Health Service.

It is difficult to draw a clear distinction between psychotherapists and counsellors and it is often a matter of opinion. However, generally psychotherapy training tends to be longer and their work focuses on deep, long-term changes in the client’s thinking and behaviour. Counsellors often concentrate on specific issues and seek a way to resolve them together with the client.

Does my private healthcare cover the sessions?
